چکیده

Scatter dark field imaging with an X-ray grating interferometer has been implemented to probe the micro-structure of polymers, fibre-reinforced composites or light metals. The method has now been developed further to enable the characterisation of the fibre laminate structure. Experimental results obtained by scatter dark field computed tomography illustrate how information on the microstructure such as micro-cracks density and weave pattern can be gained. Future developments of the technology aim at increasing the size of the field of view and improving the robustness.

A Micro-Computed Tomography Technique to Study the Quality of Fibre Optics Embedded in Composite Materials

Quality of embedment of optical fibre sensors in carbon fibre-reinforced polymers plays an important role in the resultant properties of the composite, as well as for the correct monitoring of the structure. Therefore, availability of a tool able to check the optical fibre sensor-composite interaction becomes essential. High-resolution 3D X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography, or Micro-CT, is a relat...

Analyses of composite structures behaviour with embedded Bragg grating sensors

Structural health monitoring of composite structures may be accomplished by measuring strains with embedded optical fibre sensors. In this paper, we present the performance of Bragg grating sensors, which are imbedded into a carbon composite laminate and them bonded to the structure in analyse. The paper will briefly discuss the results and compare them with a free fibre Bragg grating bonded in...

Bioinspired engineering study of Plantae vascules for self-healing composite structures.

This paper presents the first conceptual study into creating a Plantae-inspired vascular network within a fibre-reinforced polymer composite laminate, which provides an ongoing self-healing functionality without incurring a mass penalty. Through the application of a 'lost-wax' technique, orthogonal hollow vascules, inspired by the 'ray cell' structures found in ring porous hardwoods, were succe...

Surface Hardness Measurment and Microstructural Characterisation of Steel by X-Ray Diffraction Profile Analysis

An X-ray diffraction line will broaden considerably when steels change into martensitic structure on quenching. The results presented in this paper show that X-ray diffraction technique can be employed for a rapid and nondestructive measurement of hardness of hardened steel. Measurement on various quenched and tempered steels showed that the breadth of its diffraction peak increased with increa...

Optimal Design of Transmission Grating for X-ray Talbot Interferometer

How to maximize the efficiency of X-ray Talbot interferometry (XTI) is discussed for X-ray phase imaging. Shape parameters of an amplitude grating used in XTI strongly affect the efficiency. We calculated efficiencies assuming rectangular and trapezoidal patterns for an absorption grating. As a result, a rectangular absorption grating of a duty ratio of 1:1 is optimal. But, a trapezoidal patter...
